KAM have increased the tooth size and considerably increased the crown wheel thickness of their gear sets. This is to stop flexing
It is very rare for the teeth to have failure.  The next main cause of failure of the crown wheel and pinion is not as a result of the teeth failing, but as a result of failure due to crown wheel side forces distorting the bearing caps and differential assembly.The pinion pushes the crown wheel away from its set position, by twisting the diff bearing caps.  The pinion teeth will start to ride up on the crown wheel allowing the teeth to start to running in incorrect positions, this then applies excessive strains to the tooth profile, thus, as a result, will stress the teeth – eventually causing catastrophic failure of CWP teeth, and the resulting shrapnel potentially further damaging Lockers and centre diff units.

Diff pegging is a system that takes the side forces that are applied to the crown wheel often seen in off road and competitions, especially where larger tyre sizes and aggressive treads such as Simex Extreme, Boggers Etc increase this potential failure, and supports the outer diameter of the crown wheel via a Phosphor Bronze shaped thrust pad.
 

The thrust pad is adjusted to just touch the crown wheel back, backed off a few thou, and this then helps stops the pinion forcing the Differential to distort, crown wheel to flex  sideways and the casing movement.

 

You are able to adjust by nuts on the outside of the diff casing the pad setting. This should be regularly done on race and competition vehicles.
Additionally, with the design of the KAM CWPs, we have after exhaustive research, development, and testing ended up with a range offering significant increase of strength over both Standand Land Rover Units, and many of our competitors.
We have both increased the width of the crown wheel, the tooth size, the metal and treatments used and a substantial thickness of metal from the base of the CW root to the back surface further increasing strength, with our CWPs and the KAM Pegging system we offer a solution to an event all too well known with off road driving !

 

Diff cases are milled flat to obtain 32mm of engagement of the adjuster bolts.
Welded in position using specialist rods.
